The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is at the core of UNICEF's mission, which enshrines every child’s right to survival, development, protection, and participation. This committee challenges delegates to address pressing global issues affecting children by crafting policies that ensure human security, social justice, and sustainable development for future generations.

Agenda Topics

Topic A: Protecting Children in Conflict Zones: Ensuring Human Security Amid Global Crises

Children are among the most vulnerable victims of armed conflict, facing violence, displacement, recruitment into armed groups, and lack of access to basic needs. From Syria, Yemen, and Ukraine to Sudan and the Gaza Strip, millions of children are trapped in war zones, experiencing starvation, forced labour, sexual exploitation, and psychological trauma.

Key considerations for delegates:
  • Child Protection: Strengthening legal frameworks under UN Security Council Resolution 2427 and the Paris Principles on Child Soldiers.
  • Humanitarian Aid & Access: Ensuring effective UNICEF intervention in conflict zones despite geopolitical barriers, with strategies to provide continuous schooling and psychosocial support for displaced children.
  • Preventing Recruitment of Child Soldiers: Collaborating with governments and NGOs to implement demobilization and reintegration programs.

Topic B: Addressing Child Poverty and Inequality – A Foundation for Sustainable Peace

Child poverty is one of the biggest barriers to global stability and sustainable development. Over 1 billion children worldwide live in multi-dimensional poverty, lacking access to nutrition, clean water, healthcare, and education. Economic disparities, exacerbated by climate change, pandemics, and armed conflicts, create intergenerational cycles of poverty, increasing risks of child labour, trafficking, and malnutrition.

Key considerations for delegates:
  • Bridging the Wealth Gap: Implementing sustainable economic policies to reduce child poverty in low-income and conflict-prone regions.
  • Social Protection Mechanisms: Strengthening cash transfer programs, nutrition initiatives, and healthcare access for impoverished children.
  • Sustainable Development & Child Rights: Aligning solutions with UNICEF’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 4 (Quality Education).

Committee Dynamics & Expectations

This UNICEF committee is designed to be a high-impact, policy-driven, and humanitarian-focused debate. Delegates must take a multidimensional approach, balancing short-term crisis response with long-term sustainable solutions. Unlike military or security-based committees, UNICEF focuses on non-political, child-centred strategies, requiring delegates to draft resolutions emphasising humanitarian aid, international cooperation, and policy reform.

In addition to traditional debate formats, the committee may introduce crisis scenarios, requiring swift decision-making. Delegates should be well-versed in UNICEF’s Strategic Concept, operational mandates, and member states’ security interests to craft effective solutions.
